Calgary Car Buyer truck on road

About Calgary Car Buyer

Calgary Car Buyer has been buying and working on cars in Calgary for 12 years. We started as a repair garage - engines, transmissions and collision work, done by hand - and sold the cars we finished.

Today we buy vehicles instead: at least 45 a month, in any condition, across all four Calgary quadrants, towed free and paid for before the car goes on the truck.

Why did you stop repairing cars and start buying them?

Because the same conversation kept happening, and eventually we realised it was the business.

Someone would bring a car in. We'd look at it, work out what it needed, and give them a number. And then we'd watch their face as they did the arithmetic - because the repair cost more than the car would be worth once it was fixed. Not always. But often enough that it became the most common conversation in the shop.

Most of those people had nowhere good to go from there. A private buyer won't touch a car that doesn't run. A dealer won't take it on trade. Listing it means weeks of no-shows and lowball messages from people who know they're the only ones bidding. So the car would go back in the driveway and sit there, costing them registration and insurance and driveway space, while the value in it slowly went to nothing.

We were already the people who knew what those cars were actually worth. Buying them was the obvious next step.

Twelve years on, that's the whole business. We still know exactly what a transmission job costs, because we used to do them.

What does Calgary Car Buyer do now?

We buy vehicles from people in Calgary, tow them ourselves, and pay on collection. That's it - there's no showroom and we don't sell cars to the public.

At least 45 vehicles a month. Across all four quadrants, plus Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks.

The three things we buy most, in order:

01

Engine and transmission failure

By a distance the most common, and the vehicles we pay the most for.

02

Cars that won't start

Including ones that haven't moved in years.

03

Accident and collision damage

Any severity.

Beyond those: hail damage, high mileage and rust, flood and fire damage, theft recovery, broken odometers, failed inspections, and cars with paperwork problems that make them hard to sell any other way.

Why can you tell me the truth about repair costs?

Because we've done the work.

When a buyer with no mechanical background tells you a repair isn't worth doing, that's a sales pitch - they profit from you agreeing. When someone who spent years pulling transmissions tells you the same thing, it's a professional opinion. You should weigh those differently, and so should we.

So we'll tell you what we actually think:

Worth Keeping

Some repairs that sound catastrophic aren't, and the car is worth keeping.

Get a Second Opinion

Some quotes are for a full replacement when the fault hasn't been properly diagnosed, and a second opinion is worth getting.

Finished

And some cars are finished, and continuing to spend on them is throwing money at a problem that isn't going to improve.

No Conflict

We'd rather buy your car. We'd also rather you make the decision with the real numbers in front of you. If you feel pushed into selling, you tell people, and this business runs on what people tell each other.

What has 12 years in Calgary taught you?

localizationthat's genuinely about the market rather than filler. Distinct from the mechanical content on the damaged-cars page.

A broken car is not an inconvenience

Calgary is spread out and the winters are severe. When your car stops, so does the school run, the commute and the groceries. People here don't need a car buyer eventually - they need one this week. That's why we give you a price on the call instead of "we'll get back to you."

Hail rewrites our summer

Calgary sits in the most active hail corridor in the country and has been hit by at least one major storm nearly every year for two decades. In the worst of them, roughly half the damaged vehicles were written off entirely. For a few weeks afterward, our phone does nothing else.

Winter finishes off the marginal

Batteries, starters, cracked blocks. Road salt working slowly on brake lines and the underbody until a repairable car quietly stops being one.

Calgarians have heard every pitch

Calgary has been through enough boom and bust that nobody's impressed by "top dollar" or an exclamation mark. What works here is a plain number and an explanation of how you got to it. That's why we publish how we price your car instead of asking you to trust us.

Who will I be dealing with?

Not a call center, not a queue, not a different person every time you ring. If you call back next week about the same car, you'll be talking to someone who already knows about it.

Michael, Calgary Car Buyer

Michael

Owner / Lead Buyer

He answers the phone, gives you the number, and is usually the one who turns up with the truck.

"I've been turning wrenches and towing cars in Calgary for over a decade. I started this business because I got tired of seeing people get lowballed for cars that still had real value. When you call, you're talking to me directly. If I wouldn't accept the offer myself, I won't give it to you."

What we won't do

Trust built from limits rather than adjectives. Every line is a real practice, not a slogan.

  • We won't change the number in your driveway.

If the car is what you described, the price we gave you on the phone is the price you're paid. The only things that would move it are major components already removed, damage significantly worse than described, a VIN that doesn't match, or a seller who isn't the registered owner. That's the complete list.

  • We won't charge you for towing.

Not up front, and not quietly deducted from your offer. Free means free, including if you take the quote and decide not to sell.

  • We won't pressure you.

Take the number and think about it. Call back next month if you want. The offer doesn't expire because you took your time, and we won't call you back unless you ask.

  • We won't buy a stolen vehicle.

We check ownership properly on every purchase - for your protection as much as ours. If your paperwork is simply messy, that's a completely different thing and we deal with it constantly.

  • We won't pay you after we've taken the car.

Cash or e-transfer, your choice, before it goes on the truck.

Where are you based?

We don't have a lot you visit - we come to you.

We are a fully mobile car buying service, which means our team is everywhere your car is. We don't operate out of a single physical address because we don't need to - our trucks cover all four quadrants of Calgary every single day.

Whether you're parked in a downtown underground parkade, a suburban driveway in the deep SW, or a rural property just outside the city limits, our team will navigate to you and handle the entire transaction on the spot.

No matter where you are in Calgary, we come to the car.
